CROATIA REPORT - FEBRUARY

DATE and TIME:

8th of February at 12.30 p.m.

Today is a cold and snowy winter day.

THE SKY:

grey, cloudy

TEMRERATURE:

-5˚C/23˚F

WIND:

It is not windy.

ANIMALS

The animals are hibernating. The snow has covered the mole hills, and birds hide in their nests. We play with our pets. There are crow nests and crows around the school.

PLANTS

Plants are covered with snow. The trees are bare.

CLOTHES

People wear long sleeves and shirts or pullovers, warm jackets, socks, jeans or trousers. To play in snow must wear a cap, scarf, gloves or mittens and warm boots or shoes. A lot of kids also wear ski suits to be extra warm.

GAMES:

We played games in the snow: footsteps in the snow, snow battle, making a snowman.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES:

Going to the old town of Cakovec for sledging and spending time outside in snow fun activities. Afterwards, parents prepare tea and warm cocoa to make us warm.

SPECIAL DAYS AND ACTIVITIES

·                     7th February – Safer Internet Day 2012 – older students made posters and presentations

·                     14th February – Valentine's Day – we sent love notes to each other and were extra loving on that day

·                     20th February – Carnival Day – the day we put on masks and have a school dance, eat doughnuts and make winter spirits go away to welcome spring

·                     29th February – we have an extra day int his year (leap year day).

CROATIA – FEBRUARY ACTIVITIES

February was indeed various. We had all sorts of weather, and FINALLY snow!!! :)

 Real winter weather was exquisite. We had a lot of fun in the snow, too. This game is called „Footsteps in the snow“. The teacher goes first and makes the footsteps and the students have to step in those footsteps.

We made a snowman, but the snow was dry so we couldn't make a big one. Of course, all hands together made it easier!

We used pine cones to make snowman's nose and eyes, and twigs for his arms.

Finally, we had a photo session with our snowman.

And tried to make it snow by throwing the dry snow up.

Some of us found big heaps of snow and used them to make a snowman.

The sky was perfectly blue and clear.

We saw mistletoe in the trees and some crows.

We always have beautiful view on the sunset in the evening. And with the snow it is so magical.

And then, by 20th February, the snow melted…

It was really sunny, but still cold.

We played dodgeball again,

And saw a cat…

In February we usually celebrate the carnival under the masks. Masks help us to scare away the winter spirits, and invite the spring. Here is the short video clip of the fun we had in our school dance:

 All in all it was an interesting month!

FEBRUARY WEATHER REPORT

DATE AND TIME: February 29th , 11.30 am

THE SKY:Foggy but the fog melted during the morning

TEMPERATURE: 10ºC - 50ºF

WIND: Light South wind.

ANIMALS: Lizards, insects, birds, some ducks fishing in the river.

PLANTS: The Mimosa tree is covered with flowers....

CLOTHES: Depending on the day or the time winter or spring clothes.

GAMES: Basketball, football, tennis, skipping. We are at school but some of our classmates are skiing!!. They are at a resort for three days.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES: Fishing, helping in the farm, playing card games, gardening, planting potatoes and peas, bottling the cider

HOLIDAYS: We celebrated Carnival at school on Friday 17th. We were disguised as athletes and spectators who took part in the first olimpic games. Then we had a long weekend (4 days)

HOLIDAYS

We celebrate the “Triodion”, which means The Book of the Three Odes. The period which the book covers extends from the Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee (the tenth week before Pascha (Easter) and concludes with Great Saturday. During this period, the services of the Divine Liturgy and the Canonical hours undergo profound changes. The Triodion contains propers (seasonal material) for:

• The Pre-Lenten period, begins with a week in which there is no fasting.

• The following week is called the Apókreō (the "Leave-taking from Meat") in Greek. It coincides with the Carnival celebrations.

• The Tyrinĕ, that culminates on Tyrinē Sunday ("Cheese Sunday" or "Second Apokreo Sunday")

• The Clean Monday: rise kites and begin a vegetarian type diet till the Great Saturday (14th of April).

What helps us to observe the wind

We have a perfect "windometer" in our school. It is our pinwheel :) On the roof of the school it spins fastly or slowly ... depends on the strenght of the wind. It doesn't show us the direction of the wind though since the wheel is fixed.

This month's report has a light wind and you can check it out on the shot bellow that the wind really wasn't strong at all (seen also on the flags):

grass and trees are finally covered with snow (only few centimeters)

games on the snow - building igloo, making a snowman, throwing snow balls ...

FAMILY ACTIVITIES:
walking, sledding, skiing in skiing resorts

How do animals spend days during winter?

That's what we wanted to tell through our art work:

Eagels fly over the icy mountains searching for some food.

Some birds are fed by people.

Deer has to survive in woods searching for some grass, leaves ...

Fox is wandering around snow as well, hoping to get lucky with a rabbit maybe.

Some birds move to Africa but not owls!

Lynx as well is not sleeping during winter days. His coat gets longer and thicker and lighter to make him warm and not seen in the snow.

We didn’t see any birds or animals on our trip around the school

On 14 February we had a Valentine's Day at our school. We had a Valentine’s post and also we could buy sweet, red, heart shape lollypops.

February Weather Report from New Zealand.

ANIMALS:

Frogs, tadpoles, ants, birds, flies, worms

PLANTS:

All our plants are healthy and strong because it is summer and we have had plenty of rain

CLOTHES:
Our school uniform has clots, long sleeved polo shirts and short sleeves too. Christchurch gets both hot and freezing weather in summer. We need shorts  as well as trousers. Dresses are good too

FAMILY ACTIVITIES:
Sometimes if it is hot we go to sports games like softball, cricket, canoeing/ kayaking and tennis.  We love going to friends houses for playdates. We have great swimming pools like Jelly Park. In the weekends we can  hang out at skate parks if we are allowed. Biking is awesome too. One of our favourite things to do are to go camping and tramping. Reading books in the sun  is fun!  BEACH BEACH BEACH DAYS!!!

HOLIDAYS:

At the moment we are not on holiday!!!!  We are at school! 

February Report from Jaworzno, Poland

    The temperature is about  - 20 (!) , no wind, no sun, but it is really cold - winter, winter....

February Weather Report from Maine, USA

No wind at all

ANIMALS:

None at all.

PLANTS:

Trees still have no leaves. The grass is full of slush and mud.

CLOTHES:
Long sleeves, long pants, warm jackets, boots, gloves, mittens, hats, snow pants.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES:
We have a week of vacation starting Monday! Some of us are going on trips, some of us are staying home and having company. All of us are excited to have a week off!

HOLIDAYS:

 14 February is Valentine's Day. We gave each other valentine cards at school. We had fruit kabobs that we made for a snack that day.

What's up? We are Room 12 from NZ. We are a new class, new to this blog!

Finally snow in Slovenia

Just for few centimeters ...

But who cares? Nothing beats playing in snow, even if there is -8 degrees Celsius ;-)
