November Weather Report from Maine, USA

DATE AND TIME
15 November at 10:00AM

TEMPERATURE
41F/5C

SKY
cloudy

WIND
calm, but it feels damp and chilly outside

PLANTS
Most of the leaves are gone. The oak trees have a few leaves left. The grass is starting to turn brown. Our school garden is wet and muddy, and there is nothing left to harvest.

CLOTHES
long sleeves, long pants, shoes or sneakers, jackets, sweatshirts, sweaters

ANIMALS
We saw a squirrel's nest (a drey) high up in one of the trees. We were excited because we have been studying squirrels! We also saw some crows and a few seagulls.

FAMILY ACTIVITIES
biking, walking, gathering for our Thanksgiving feasts
Some of us will get our Christmas trees soon. Christmas tree farms are a business in Maine. We'll tell you more about them next month!

HOLIDAYS
The first Tuesday in November is Election Day. We have school, but everyone over 18 goes to vote for our political officers.

Veteran's Day is 11 November. This is a national holiday, and schools are closed. It is a day when we thank our veteran's for their service. This year we wrote to our teacher's father, who is a World War II veteran.
Thanksgiving is 24 November. It is a national holiday, and there is no school for us from 23-28 November. We are celebrating the harvest and our blessings. Families and friends
gather together for a big feast. Our Thanksgiving feast includes turkey, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie and apple pie. We are thankful for all the new friends we met doing this project!

Where did the father of your teacher fight during the WW II? Many American solders were involved in battles in Slovenia. A beautiful (and sad) Slovenian movie was made about the friendship between black American pilot who was shot down and two orphaned Slovenian children during the world war II. Those kids were looking for a valley of peace where no war would take place and the wounded American pilot helped them ... It is a Slovenian cinema classic and everyone knows this film from 1956.

You can actually see the movie on youtube (The valley of Peace):

Peace to all!

He was a pilot, and he fought in the South Pacific. I'm going to watch The Valley of Peace!

Thanksgiving Day sounds delicious! As a matter of fact I had an opportunity to taste the original American turkey (I lived in the States) with mashed potatoes, sweet corn but unfortunately without cranberry sauce so my memories are relly good about these holidays :)

A week out off school? Lucky you!

The Valley of Peace didn't have any subtitles, but what I watched was beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

I'm happy you watched ... at least a part. WW II is really an important part od our history and this movie shows how people get connected and how there is just noone not impacted by violence when it starts ...

Thank you for watching. It is a beautiful feeling of sharing something valuable.
